To be beautiful goes way beyond looking gorgeous. We’re opting for the beauty that doesn’t harm anyone in the process, not even a bee!

With over 300 brands, Sephora is home to a variety of beauty brands including (but not limited to) Calvin Klien, Anatasia Beverly Hills, and Hourglass.

There’s a lot of variety but things change when you’re vegan. Shopping for 100% vegan makeup brands at Sephora is not so easy. Although they offer plenty of vegan beauty products, there’s much to using vegan makeup than buying one without beeswax!

There’s only a handful of strictly vegan brands that don’t use animal-derived or animal-made products in their makeup, nor test their products on animals.

While there are many people who use vegan makeup for one reason or another. Some of us only want to buy makeup from vegan-friendly companies. That’s why we’ve compiled a list of 100% vegan brands at Sephora.

Sephora Brand is not Vegan (or Cruelty-free):

Before going onwards, did you know?

Despite having a lot of vegan and cruelty-free brands, Sephora (itself) is not vegan or cruelty-free. The reason being, they sell their products in mainland China where animal testing is required by law.

Sephora is also not included in PETA’s list of vegan brands.

Vegan Makeup Brands at Sephora:

About two-thirds of the makeup brands sold on Sephora are cruelty-free and certified by PETA. When we say vegan, we mean 100% vegan and cruelty-free. Brands like Alpyn Beauty, Biossance, and Four Sigmatic.

Sephora doesn’t offer a separate category for vegan brands. You can find the vegan makeup in shop -> makeup -> vegan makeup.

Beware that not all vegan makeup in Sephora collection comes from a vegan brand. Take Anastasia Beverly Hills for instance. It’s a cruelty-free brand but some of their makeup products include beeswax and honey. Therefore, it’s not vegan but you’ll find their beauty makeup products under vegan makeup listing.

All brands included in our list are 100% vegan and cruelty-free. They don’t test their makeup products on animals nor market in China.

There are some brands don’t test their products on animals until it’s required by law. One way or the other, they’re not vegan and we’ll cross out any brands such brands too. Recently, NARS has extended its line to the Chinese market, so it’s no longer a vegan brand.

The much-contested laws regarding animal testing in China are to be changed in 2020. New laws are drafted that won’t require brands to test their products on animals before selling in markets. This law, if imposed will spare thousands of beautiful innocent animals from being test subjects.

Vegan Makeup Brands Owned by Non-Vegan Parent Companies

Some brands on our list are owned by companies that are not cruelty-free or vegan. For instance, Urban Decay and NYX are owned by L’oreal, and Hourglass is owned by Unilever.

Having a non-vegan parent company doesn’t make these brands any less vegan. They don’t test their makeup on animals nor use animal-derived products.

Using beauty products from these brands is your own decision but personally, I think buying from brands and choosing this particular line over another is an open message to the parent company. That we choose cruelty-free products and that’s what we want!
